Panama is considered as one of the key crossroads in the world, serving as a land bridge between North and South America. It is also the waterway between the Atlantic and the Pacific. Panama has everything that qualifies it as a Central American hotspot – a teeming wildlife, wonderful sandy beaches, a haven for scuba divers, world class fishing areas, reliable transportation, English-proficient population and cosmopolitan capital city – minus the crowd.

If you are visiting Panama, it is a must that you see the Panama Canal – one of the largest and most difficult engineering projects in the world. We all know the huge impact its construction has on shipping and the controversies the builders had to face to accomplish this feat – it’s a must that we pay tribute.

The Casco Viejo de Panama is one of the oldest city in the Pacific Coast of the Americas. Located at the mouth of the Panama Canal, a few minutes away from Panama City, it is reminiscent of the French Quarter in New Orleans and is a true cultural gem.

The capital city of the Republic of Panama, aptly named as Panama City, is located at the Pacific entrance of the Panama Canal. It has a blend of old Spain and modern America and is perfect for travelers who are looking for a taste of history with the conveniences of modern living. Some of the old colonial buildings such as the Court of Justice, Plaza de Francia, Paseo de las Bovedas and the Santo Domingo Church are just some of the interesting places to visit. The old city, Salon Bolivar, has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. You will also find one of the most interesting museums in the country in Panama City – the Panamanian Man.

Colon, the biggest city in Panama is located in the in the Caribbean end of the Canal. From here, visitors can see the cathedral, and the statues known as the Paseo Centenario. If you are looking for luxury items which are duty free, you will find the shopping center at Front Street as the perfect destination.

At present, Panama is becoming a favorite among travelers particularly because prices here are cheaper than other areas located in Central America and in the Caribbean. From Panama vacation homes to food and other activities, you will find something that will fit your budget. A visit to Panama is also very convenient it has a long tradition of service to foreigners and is accessible through direct flights. Transportation around the country is also very easy because of its supreme architecture. The country also has one of the most stable democracies in Latin America so it is considered as a safe destination. It is rarely affected by natural disasters, being the only hurricane free zone in Central America and it has a low crime rate making it one of the top choices for a family vacation.

With the work-at-home trend on the rise, employees are looking for ways to create an efficient office space at home that is functional while also being eco-friendly. Telecommuting is, by virtue of its gas-saving abilities, inherently green. Fewer employees commuting to work means less dependence on gas and less energy being used to power commercial buildings, a boon to our pocketbooks and our natural surroundings. However, it is important to carry this eco-friendly mentality beyond just gas consumption and into easily implemented changes for our home offices.

Fresh Air, Natural Light: This one seems obvious, but will make a huge difference not only in your energy bill, but in your mood and motivation. Study after study has shown that natural sunlight improves mood and that fresh air and access to the outdoors boosts motivation and energy. Not to mention, cracking that window open means turning down that A/C and switching off the light! Reuse: Almost everything in your office can be used multiple times, or multiple ways. Printed on a half sheet of paper? Cut the other half off and save it for a grocery list or to jot down a quick to-do list. Done with your printer ink cartridge? Refill it, or purchase a remanufactured ink cartridge instead of buying new ones that require more energy to create and more plastic. Recycle: Papers, plastics and glass can all be recycled. Find out which materials your city recycled and be sure to place recycling bins (these can just be wastepaper baskets) in your home office. Purchasing recycled products (paper cups, printer paper, manila folders, etc) is also beneficial as it cuts back on tree depletion. Even your business cards can be made from recycled products! Don’t toss your empty ink or laser toner cartridges in the trash! The remaining ink or chemicals will seep into the earth and cause major damage. There are easy ways to recycle ink cartridges! Just enter your zip code into the Earth 911 recycling center location tool to find the recycling station nearest to your home. Go Vintage: Purchase office furniture that is vintage or gently used instead of buying new items that require the destruction of more natural resources and more energy consumption to produce. Unplug to Save Energy: Not using your printer? Unplug it. Even if they are not in use and have been switched off, electronics still use a minimal amount of energy as long as they remain plugged in.

The term “Medical Tourism” also known as health tourism is becoming very popular in these days. It means to travel across different countries to find health care. These health care or treatments include common problems and complex treatments such as cardiac surgery, joint replacement, cosmetic surgery and dental surgery. The customer and provider communicate through reliable sources to assure quality of service and making contract. Such medical tours need leisure aspects of tourism and travel. Health tourism patients should know the extra cost in traveling, health care and accommodations on treatment locations. The popularity of medical tourism is increased by many factors such as long waits for certain procedures, high costs, affordability of travel, standard and quality of health and care services. Medical tourists travel to Europe, United States, UK, Canada, Middle East, Canada and Japan to obtain quality health care services at reasonable prices.

Mexico

The specialists of plastic surgery and dentistry are very popular in Mexico. Medical tourism patients travel to Mexico from all over the world to obtain quality medical care in dentistry and plastic surgery. Americans also move to Mexico for dental health care because the charges of dentist in America are very high as compare to the charges of Mexican dentist. Mexican dentists charge one fourth to one fifth of US dentists price. This trend of medical tourism to Mexico is very alarming for American dentists so they have spread many rumors of infections, oral cancer and poor treatments against Mexican dentists.

In Texas, it is explored that health organizations can operate on both sides of the border but physicians of south Texas argue that they cannot compete with the lower costs of Mexican dentists. Legal system of Mexico doesn’t allow any kind of sue against Mexican doctors. Medical tourists are satisfied with the quality of health services in Mexico and according to an advocacy group of health care issues 90 percent care they received in Mexico is excellent. Mexican hospitals are not popular only for dental and plastic surgery but they provide quality services for bar iatric surgery for weight loss. Lap band surgery, a popular bar iatric surgery is approved by FDA in 2001 in US is also performed by the surgeons of Mexico. The hospitals of Mexico are well equipped with latest technology and medical equipments.

Panama

Panama is also a popular place for medical tourism due to its tourist appeal, position and use of dollar as the official currency. The medical specialists of Panama are very popular all over the world and use latest technology and equipment to treat patients. Doctors of Panama are bilingual and can operate on the same technology and medical equipment which are used in Europe and America. The charges of health care in Panama are 50% less than the charges of US. In addition to dental implants, assisted reproduction, plastic surgery, cosmetic dentistry, cardialogy, eye surgery orthopedics and pulmonology are the popular treatments in the hospitals of Panama.

The equipment and technology used in the hospitals of Panama is up-to-date and the hospitals are affiliated with international organizations such as Cleveland Clinic, Baptist Health International of Miami, Johns Hopkins International, Miami Children’s Hospital, Tulane Health Science Center, University of Nebraska Medical Center, Harvard Medical Faculty and Physicians at Beth Israel, The Kendall Medical Center in Florida and Deaconess Medical Center in US. The doctors of these hospitals have latest information about the diseases and medicines.

US trained physicians of Panama provide high quality medical services at reasonable prices. The techniques used in health care, facilities and medications are not less than USA. Panama is rich with beautiful destinations such as mountains, beaches and natural places which affect medical tourists pleasantly.

Medical tourism is becoming more and more common, therefore people are looking at travel with a different perspective than they used to. Previous travel was linked to either solely work function or vacation. Now, because of medical tourism, healthcare can also be linked to travel, which has changed the economy in many different areas of the world. Singapore, a small island, has a new operation to encourage and sponsor a program called “Singapore medical tourism” through the health and travel world.

Thailand and Philippines are becoming more and more popular spots as well, not only as vacation destinations, but due to the high quality, friendliness and affordable prices for medial procedures. People are traveling to other countries to get better healthcare services. So medical tourism sector requires people to cater to these travelers. People working in this sector are able to get handsome salary besides respectful job. You ought to have a good understanding about people’s needs and how all this actually works to get a decent job in this sector.

Medical travel jobs are not meant for everyone. The requirements to be a successful nurse or in medical travel jobs are being laborious, generous and having a supreme respect for humanity. You will also need to learn about different cultures and be able to speak foreign languages fluently.

Learning foreign languages helps you communicate with people who have traveled to your country of work for healthcare. Understanding their culture helps you develop a bond with them and therefore allows you to serve them better. When they get good service, you stand to gain good rewards from them as well as your employer.

Paperwork is ubiquitous for all workers in the medical field, as well as work permits and never more so than when you are working with patients who are tourists or immigrants. An in-depth knowledge of visa documentation and travel insurance is crucial when trying to ascertain the travel insurance medical condition of the foreign patient.

Medical tourism has become popular in many countries such as India, Thailand, the Philippines, Columbia, New Zealand, Jordan, Panama, Portugal, Spain and Canada. Instead of just working in your own country, you can look for medical travel jobs in other countries. It is a dream actually when you think about it: being able to travel and see different cultures, meet new and interesting people while still make a living! Instead of returning “home” after a travel broke (as many of us tends to do..), you can actually return with more money in the bank then when you left!

The United States dollar is the official currency of the country of Panama, but the country has the Balboa which is on par value with the dollar and they are interchangeable. Please note that all Panamanian money is in coin and there is no paper money. Panamanian coins are the same size and weight as US coins and come in the same denominations.

Travelers’ Checks and Credit Cards

In theory travelers’ checks and credit cards are widely accepted in Panama but in reality outside of Panama City they are unwelcome. In Bocas very few places accept credit cards and nowhere accepts travelers’ checks….NOWHERE!

Cash is Available From ATM’s

Bring your debit cards or credit cards that permit cash withdrawals and do not forget to notify your bank or credit card company you will be traveling in Panama. Many banks and credit cards will block international ATM transactions if you have not notified them in advance of your travel plans. While this is a great security practice it is a bit frightening when you go to the ATM and your request for cash is declined. If this does happen you can contact your bank and get it straightened out but given time differences this can sometimes take a day, better to let the bank know in advance of your plans.

There are two ATM machines on Bocas and both are at Banco National two blocks from the airport. Be advised on Friday and Saturday they will sometimes run out of cash but are refilled the next day. Each ATM has a $500 dollar limit, but $500 dollars is a lot of money on Bocas, a three dollar transaction fee is charged on each ATM transaction in addition to whatever local bank fees may be charged.

Tipping and Taxes

Until a few years ago there was no tipping in Bocas but it has become more prevalent and the amount is usually 10%. Often the tip is included in the check, so look before you tip. A 10% tax is added on to hotel bills and a 5% tax is on most restaurant bills and if it is not written out ask about it before you pay your bill. Taxi drivers do not expect to be tipped.

Budgeting

Prices are low in Panama but tend to be a little higher in Bocas because it is an island and it costs more to get things to the island. Beware, prices for budgeting in older printed guidebooks are way off, most things cost more than the books suggest but prices are still inexpensive by US or European standards.

THE days of floppy disks, MS DOS, and monitors the size of small sedans have long given way to a new era of computer technology: an era where blogs, downloads, and search engines have revolutionized not only the way people communicate, but the way people live. One small country in Central America is active proof that, with the power of the internet, far-fetched ideas are a lot more feasible than one might think.

May 25th, 2007: The government of the Republic of Panama–a nation 3.5 million people strong, in the midst of a hefty real estate and tourism thrust–passed a law changing the length of a traditional tourist visa. The new law required foreign travelers to leave not once every 3 months as traditionally declared, but once every 30 days. This law elicited an uproar from the country’s growing investor community who feared it would be a serious roadblock to the promotion of Panama as a retirement haven.

It became apparent over the ensuing month that the decision made by the Panamanian government lacked adequate research, principally in the possible effects on the status of Panama’s expat community, both in-country and abroad. But how, with so many expats scattered all over the globe, was a single cause to be heard? And how, if presented with such a call to action, would a confident government react?

June 22nd, 2007: Enter Prima Panama, a humble real estate marketing and consulting company based out of Panama City. Acting as an advocate for those who would be personally affected by the tourist visa change, this small group made history with, what at first seemed like a futile plan: to create a short online survey examining just how important the new tourist visa law would be to its clients.

June 25th, 2007: The survey took off like a rocket. 100 completed surveys, then 300 surveys, then 700 surveys! The group’s blog website saw as many as 10,000 unique visitors a day: each of whom, without a doubt, had something to say about the issue at hand. Nightly updates with photos were posted keeping readers abreast of the day’s activities and readers followed them intently. Developers wrote in with desperate pleas, future investors commented with doubt, and Panamanian citizens responded with their own feelings of disgust: the results were overwhelmingly negative.

Link to the updates:

http://primapanama.blogs.com/_panama_residential_devel/2007/07/three-days-of-l.html

June 27th, 2007: Representing concerned individuals from over 21 countries, Prima Panama willingly became the voice for what had, up until then, been a faceless and anonymous concern. They presented “the book” and their findings to policy makers at a series of meetings and each meeting appeared to go better than the last. Because Panama is such a small country and because the numbers in their study were so sizeable, the team at Prima Panama seemed to cut themselves a path, clear and direct to the top. And impressively, those at the top actually cared about what they had to say.

June 28th, 2007: When high level administration representatives of the President of the Republic called personally to compliment them for their efforts and to ensure a quick and effective policy change, the gang at Prima Panama–along with hundreds of thousands of other Panama-philes around the world–took one giant sigh of relief. In just six short days, a law was made, information was disseminated, a market responded, results were compiled, policy makers consulted, and a change was in the works. Presto!

If, by perseverance, a sloth could make it to Noah’s Arc, then the team at Prima Panama figured maybe they could lobby to change the tourist visa back to its original 90 day formula. What they didn’t expect was the speed or power of their biggest ally–the world wide web. It was a story of technology and free flowing information in which people thousands of miles away were able to react to an issue in real time. And with that, in the small isthmus of Panama, a grand new voice was born.

###

About Prima Panama

Prima Panama is a real estate marketing and consulting firm based out of Panama City, Panama. Their efforts in statistical research regarding the area’s investment boom have been one-of-a-kind and their Prima Passport program has established itself as one of the most honest and useful investment tools on the market.

10. It’s a party town- The majority of the year, PCB is a pretty calm and laid back place to vacation. If you aren’t into the party scene and want to enjoy a beach vacation during the spring break season then PCB probably is not the place for you. Luckily, spring break season only falls during the month of March, leaving you nearly 11 months of the year to enjoy everything that PCB has to offer. If the girls gone wild scene is what you are looking for, you should hit up the beach in March.

9. It is expensive- I’m not exactly sure where this rumor has come about, but PCB is actually cheaper than other comparable destinations in some aspects. For example, the recent influx of vacation rentals has driven the price of lodging in the area down significantly. Not to mention, beach access is free most places that you go. Trust me, you won’t find a cheaper beach vacation.

8.There isn’t anything to do- Once again; I’m not sure about this one. Every time I have gone to PCB there has been so much to do that I didn’t have the opportunity to get it all done. No matter who is vacationing with you, there is something for everyone. There are golf courses, fishing, tours, beach activities, shopping, dining, water parks, go-carts, parasailing, bungee jumping, and so much more.

7. There isn’t any good food to eat- This myth is my personal favorite. There is a variety of every type of food that you could possibly want to eat in PCB. There is an excess of pancake places for breakfast, tons of fast food, plenty of local seafood, several locally owned Greek restaurants, Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville, and all the chains you could possible want. You will not go hungry in PCB. Fare warning for those of you from Texas or Mexico: Pass on the Mexican food because you will be severely disappointed, others may like it.

6. The island is a dump- This may have been a concern in the early 2000′s, but this kind of rhetoric is no longer applicable. PCB is a new and vibrant city thanks to the many recent construction projects. The main street is lined with luxurious condominiums and entertainment districts. The beaches are as beautiful as always and the island is better kept than ever before.

5. The beach is dangerous- The Panama City Beach Police Department has a specific until designated to the beach to ensure the safety of all citizens. The Beach and Surf Information Unit keeps a close watch on the water and places beach warning flags in areas where people swim. As long as you heed the warnings of the flags you should be safe.

4. The beaches are crowded- There are certain times of the year when the beaches are more crowded than others. Luckily, PCB has 27 miles of beaches. There is plenty of beach access and room for all. But, if you are looking for something more low key, St. Andrew’s State Park is the place to go. This state park has over a mile and half of beach area and other various recreational activities as well.

3.There is not enough lodging- This is not a myth, but a flat out lie. PCB has everything you could possibly want. There are campgrounds, RV parks, motels, hotels, condominiums, and cabins. You name it and Panama City Beach has it! But, my suggestion is to stay in a condo on the beach if you want to get the most out of your vacation.

2. You will be eaten by a shark- Billions of people flock to beaches each year and it is very rare to hear about shark attacks. Sharks do live in the water, and no matter what beach vacation you take you will hear tales about sharks. Stop worrying and enjoy the water, you have a better chance of being struck by lightening.

1.Your vacation will be ruined by hurricanes- I wouldn’t worry too much about this one. Unlike other natural disasters, there is plenty of warning before a hurricane approaches. Go ahead and book your vacation in advance and be sure to purchase insurance. If by chance a hurricane does roll through, you will be covered. Quit being fooled by rumors and plan the vacation of your dreams.

The political and cultural existence of China reaches farther back into history than any country presently existing in the world. China has over 4000 years of written history, an accomplishment no other country can boast of. Several of its ten dynasties lasted longer than the entire history of the United States, and the construction of China’s Great Wall, its greatest construction achievement, lasted nearly 2000 years.

By the 1800′s the dynastic powers of Chinese rulers diminished, leading to foreign intervention and internal rebellion. It continued to weaken until at the end of World War II, the Nationalist government was defeated by the Chinese Communist Party in a civil war. Since the 1800′s there have been numerous migrations out of China into other countries.

One such migration occurred in 1854 when a large number of Chinese came to the country of Panama to help build the Panamanian railway. Many of these Chinese immigrants, for the most part single men, migrated by way of British colonies, like Hong Kong and the British West Indies. So, in addition to speaking their native Chinese languages, most also spoke some English. Over time the majority of these Chinese immigrants became merchants and professionals and kept up not only their native languages, but added English, Spanish, and other languages to their daily linguistic repertoire.

The Chinese established settlements in many towns and cities throughout Panama, adapting to the local culture, but never giving up their own cultural traditions. Even the Chinese cemeteries in Panama City and El Chorillo are set up according to the Chinese feng shui tradition, sitting at the slope of a hill to give shelter to the souls of their ancestors.

Chinese cultural celebrations are still celebrated throughout Panama. New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day are a significant family affair each year. It is a time of reunion, thanksgiving, and religious ceremonies, and is highlighted in most communities by a Chinese New Year’s parade. And, don’t forget the fireworks, the Chinese invented them.

The Panama Canal Expansion, started in 2007 and scheduled for completion in 2014; the centennial of the opening of the original Panama Canal locks, brought with it a new generation of Chinese to Panama. A large part of the financing for the additional lock will be provided by Mainland China, as well as construction personnel. With the heaviest period of construction coming between 2010 and 2013, the influx is likely to continue. Likewise, the continued importance of the Chinese population in Panama seems assured. Whether the newer arrivals will attain the importance already attained by the early immigrants is still to be decided.
